MEET OUR PRINCIPAL By: Martha Carrion and Sarah Marquez
We have a new principal
this year and we had the honor to meet and interview her.
It was a pleasure to do so. She’s a very amiable person, who wants the best
for our school. Mrs. Anna Hernandez was born in Mrs.
Hernandez was an English teacher for eight years
and then became a guidance
counselor for three years. After this,
she became an assistant principal for
another eight years.
Afterwards, she received her first job as a principal here at Milam.
“I’ve always wanted to be a teacher”,
she affirmed. Mrs. Hernandez has worked
at Hialeah High, Barbara Goleman Senior High School, and now joins us here at
our school, M. A.
Milam K-8 Center. Mrs. Hernandez indicates that she has no major changes in mind for Milam, but she would like to have annual orientations with parents at the very beginning of the school year. She also mentioned that she would like to be able to be available to students and teachers at all times; that is why she has an "Open Door" policy. If you haven’t met Mrs. Anna Hernandez, you’re missing out on a lot. She’s a very heartwarming person and a great addition to our school!

By: Jasmine Gamboa and
Brian Velez Milam’s Open House on September 11, 2008 was a total success!
Many teachers were happy with the amount of parents that came out that night.
Teachers were able to inform parents about the current school year.
Furthermore, parents were able to meet with teachers and class expectations
and requirements were discussed. Our assistant principal, Mrs. Rolle
indicated, “It was a pleasure to see parent and students smiling while
visiting the classes”. All the teachers did exceptional presentations and they
were able to express what they anticipated of the students this upcoming
year. To add on to the good news, the new principal here in Milam, Mrs.
Hernandez showed up for the first time in public to introduce herself and
greet parents and students of Milam, alike. As the evening came to a close,
parents departed and everyone was
content with our 2008-2009 Open House.
Celebrating Constitution Day! by Lillian Moreno In honor of Constitution Day, September 17th, Milam Social Studies teachers invited a special guest to speak at our school. Judge Israel Reyes came out and spoke to many middle school classes about the law. Growing up, Mr. Reyes didn't always want to be a judge, but he was always interested in the law and in government. A resident of Hialeah, Judge Reyes attended Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School. He became a part of the police department after college. He went on to work for the Homicide Unit for five years and then later became a Circuit Judge. While speaking to us he said that even though he handles many tough cases, he loves his job and that he wouldn't change his it for anything in the world, including "winning the lottery"! He stated that he does not get paid a great deal of money, but he that is not the reason that he does what he does. It is the work that keeps him going. At the moment he is working on a case that involves five young men who committed a crime (allegedly) and are facing the death penalty. He knows that doing his job correctly will make a difference in people's lives and that is why is remains in the field. We are grateful that Judge Reyes came out and allowed us to learn more about the law and our government on this momentous day!
Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow: Disability to Ability By:
Leiny Ruiz Beginning on September 27, 2008 through October 3rd, 2008 Milam will be celebrating E.S.E week. This is a week dedicated to all students with disabilities that attend our school. During E.S.E week all of the students in Milam will work together; realizing that no matter how big our differences are, we do still have many things in common. E.S.E week is a national celebration in which the E.S.E teachers (within a given school) all get together and plan out an entire week of activities and events, in honor of students with disabilities. This week is a celebration of equality; that is, honoring commonalities, rather than differences. During E.S.E week at Milam we want teachers, staff, parents, and especially students to know that our school is not divided up into two halves: half a school of regular education students and half of a school of exceptional students with disabilities. We are and have always been one school with one mission. That mission is to improve educational opportunities and achievement for all students. In previous years, E.S.E week has had art galleries and presentations in the morning announcements. However, this year's theme is quite unique and original. E.S.E will be bringing Milam a "once in a lifetime" carnival event! I hope that this celebration can touch everyone's heart and make us realize that Milam is our second home and that at the end of the day, we're all in this together!
